Postdoctoral Researcher Bioinformatics | University of Helsinki
Join the Vähärautio Lab at the University of Helsinki as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Bioinformatics. Apply by September 18, 2026!
About the Role
The Research Programs Unit at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Helsinki, is seeking an ambitious and talented Postdoctoral Researcher / Bioinformatician to join the cutting-edge Vähärautio Lab.
If you are passionate about leveraging advanced computational biology to tackle one of medicine’s toughest challenges, this is your opportunity to make a lasting impact. Our research focuses on investigating treatment resistance in ovarian cancer, combining state-of-the-art molecular biology with multi-omic single-cell analyses, lineage tracing, and molecular recording. By joining us, you will play a pivotal role in uncovering how cellular history and gene regulation shape therapy resistance, directly driving innovations in translational medicine and future cancer treatments.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead Computational Analysis: Design, execute, and scale robust bioinformatics pipelines for high-throughput multi-omic single-cell datasets.
- Multi-Omic Integration: Analyze complex single-cell transcriptomics data, with exciting opportunities to expand into ATAC-seq, CROP-seq, spatial biology, advanced imaging, and metabolic datasets.
- Collaborate Across Disciplines: Work closely with molecular biologists, wet-lab researchers, and clinicians within an interdisciplinary environment that bridges cancer biology and data science.
- Drive Scientific Discovery: Advance collaborative projects exploring lineage tracing, molecular recording, and the underlying mechanisms of therapy resistance in ovarian cancer.
- Disseminate Findings: Author peer-reviewed publications in high-impact scientific journals and present insights at national and international conferences.
Requirements & Qualifications
Must-Haves
- Education: Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Data Science, Molecular Biology, Genetics, or a closely related quantitative or life science discipline.
- Technical Expertise: Proven hands-on experience in analyzing high-throughput genomic or transcriptomic data, with a strong emphasis on single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq).
- Programming Proficiency: Advanced coding skills in R or Python for statistical modeling, data visualization, and bioinformatics pipeline development.
- Research Drive: A solid publication record and a demonstrated passion for translational cancer research and molecular systems biology.
Nice-to-Haves
- Practical experience with complementary omics modalities (e.g., ATAC-seq, CROP-seq, spatial transcriptomics, or metabolomics).
- Familiarity with lineage tracing models or molecular recording techniques.
- Demonstrated ability to thrive and communicate effectively in a collaborative, international research team.
What We Offer / Benefits
- Cutting-Edge Science: Work at the forefront of single-cell biology and translational cancer research using state-of-the-art technologies and methodologies.
- Interdisciplinary Network: Collaborate extensively with top-tier national and international research groups, clinicians, and data science leaders.
- Professional Growth: Exceptional opportunities for career development, high-impact mentoring, and expanding your academic profile within a world-class research university.
- Compensation: Competitive salary based on the structured Finnish university salary system, supplemented by comprehensive Nordic employee benefits.
- Vibrant Lifestyle: Live and work in Helsinki, a global innovation hub known for its high quality of life, safety, and thriving scientific community.
